Pitching In Southern Football League Fixtures 2022/23

The eagerly awaited fixtures for the 2022/23 Pitching In Southern Football League have been issued and the opening day sees some enticing encounters in the two Premier Divisions!

In the Premier Division Central, the three clubs switched from the Northern Premier League by the FA’s National League System Committee have all been handed away games on Saturday, August 6th.

Mickleover face a trip to Hertfordshire to take on Kings Langley, while Basford United could almost share a coach as they also head to the same county to take on Steve Castle’s Royston Town outfit at Garden Walk.

The NPL Division One Midlands champions Ilkeston Town have a very tough start as they head to the CR Mot Centre Community Stadium to take on a Tamworth side tipped to feature amongst the promotion candidates in Andy Peaks` first full season in charge.

Division One Central title-winners Bedford Town also start their Step 3 campaign away from home, with Gary Setchell’s Eagles travelling to the Arden Garages Stadium to take on Stratford Town.

The opening day of the Premier Division South sees something of a reverse situation, whereby the two clubs switched by the FA from the Isthmian League have been handed home starts.

Isthmian South Central champions Bracknell Town will welcome fancied Weston-super-Mare to The SB Stadium in front of what is expected to be a decent crowd.

Hanwell Town, who have been members of the league before, have been promoted as Isthmian South Central Division play-off winners and also host West Country visitors in Truro City, another team expected to feature in the promotion race.

The teams promoted from Division One South, champions Plymouth Parkway and play-off winners Winchester City, have both been handed home starts.

Lee Hobbs` Parkway outfit, looking for a third successive promotion, welcome Chesham United to Bolitho Park, while the Citizens have Poole Town making the relatively short trip from Dorset.

Division One Central play-off winners North Leigh, who were switched south by the FA, have a long journey to Dorchester Town as they embark on their first-ever game at Step 3 level.

Division One Central and Division One South start a week later on Saturday, August 13th.

It’s a somewhat new-look Division One Central, with five `new` teams.

Walthamstow, promoted as champions of the Essex Senior League, are expected to be up amongst the promotion contenders but face a tricky opening fixture at Herns Lane against a Welwyn Garden City side managed by one of their former players, Max Mitchell, and one or two ex-Stow players.

Hadley, promoted from the Spartan South Midlands League, also face an opening day away trip as they make their way to Highworth Town, who were switched by the FA from Division One South along with Cirencester Town.

John Brough’s Centurians are another team tipped to do well in 2022/23 and face a stern test in their first game as they travel to Langford Road to take on Biggleswade Town, who were relegated from the Premier Division Central but have Robbie O`Keefe embarking on his first full season in charge with a number of exciting youngsters joining the Waders.

The opening day of the Division One South campaign welcomes no less than six new clubs.

For Bishops Cleeve it’s a return to the Southern League after four seasons away.

Cleeve have returned as Uhlsport Hellenic League champions and have a really tough-looking start as they journey south to take on much-fancied AFC Totton at the Snows Stadium.

Another making a welcome return to the league are Bashley, who have spent six seasons in the Wessex League but now are back after finishing runners-up to another of the league newcomers, Hamworthy United.

Bash welcome Bristol Manor Farm to the Hampshire village, while the Hammers face the long trek to Devon to play Bideford AFC, who will be hoping for a much better season after flirting with relegation for most of last term.

Tavistock AFC, Toolstation Western League champions, and Exmouth Town, who finished just behind them in second, embark on their first campaigns at Step 4 level with away games.

Tavi, who could be dark horses given their summer recruitment to date, travel up the M5 to play Larkhall Athletic, while Exmouth head in a similar direction to fancied Melksham Town, who are anticipating a good opening day attendance.

Westbury United also have their first taste of Step 4 football after coming up as Uhlsport Hellenic League runners-up.

And they too are away on the opening day, travelling down to Devon to play Willand Rovers.

Wimborne Town, relegated from the Premier Division South, have been making some stella signings and James Stokoe’s side outfit look determined to make their stay in Division One South as brief as possible.

The Magpies are at home to Cinderford Town, who struggled last term, on the opening day.
